Künz launches RTG at TOC Europe

The new “Freerider” RTG features a unique, aerodynamic single girder and a new hoist system.

Hans Künz has unveiled a unique new concept for the container crane market, an RTG with a single girder and an A-frame leg structure. The crane looks very similar to the new ASC Künz developed for APM Terminals’ new facility at Tanger Med in Morocco, but running on rubber tyres with a 16-wheel drive system instead of crane rails.

The Freerider features a new 8-rope hoist system called “Spider”, where eight gear motors drive eight separate rope drums that are reeved directly to the headblock. This achieves a very stiff rope tower that acts as a mechanical anti-sway system and can move the load in all six degrees of freedom simultaneously. Micro motion of up to 300mm in all direction can be achieved, along with 5 degrees of movement in the trim, list and skew directions.

Another unique feature is the new “One Hand” control system, where a single joystick controls all the crane travel motions by directionally moving the control know, and the hoist by raising and lowering the same knob.

Using A-frame legs and single girder enables Künz to lower the weight of the crane structure, while increasing stiffness. Gantry travel speeds are 130/160 m/min, with and without a load, which Künz says is the fastest available on the market today.

The A-frame leg structure means there is no clear portal for the trolley to enter at the end of the main girder in the reverse trolley travel direction. Künz has compensated for this by moving the cab more towards the centre of the spreader, and adding a camera system for a view of the working area when obscured by the spreader.

Freerider was designed with automation in mind from the outset, as an alternative to ASCs in an end loaded block configuration. This, says Künz, means RTG terminals can convert to automated operations using their existing RTG runways, without a loss of stacking capacity, and without significant civil works (except for electrification and the creation of transfer zones).

Freerider is available in widths equivalent to 5 + 1 up to 9 +1, and stacking heights from 1-over-4 to 1-over-6. Power supply options are a cable reel, conductor rail, diesel generator or a hybrid drive.
